Role Description

Under general supervision, the Airfield Safety Officer performs patrol and inspection duties of airfield and other facilities and conducts investigations to enforce the Airport Security Program and to ensure compliance with Federal, Airport, and Transportation Security Regulations.

Duties

  • Inspects and evaluates airfield facilities, such as runways, taxiways, safety areas, paved & non‑paved surfaces, lighting, signage, markings, and security assets for conformance with safety and security regulations.
  • Closes and reopens airfield facilities, including runways, taxiways, ramps, aircraft gate positions, and security assets (e.g., fences and gates) based on safe and secure conditions.
  • Monitors and directs the movement of vehicles, persons, and equipment on the airfield, and provides escort and safety/security support to ensure safe and efficient operations.
  • Notifies aeronautical users through various communication channels; monitors multiple radios for changes in airfield conditions.
  • Verifies compliance with assigned aircraft parking spaces to ensure maximum utilization.
  • Enforces Airport regulations and issues citations for violations; enters citations into the database.
  • Responds to security breaches, violations, and all emergencies; acts as first responder and administers first aid as required.
  • Maintains emergency equipment and supplies and operates the Mobile Command Post.
  • Investigates airfield incidents and accidents, identifies contributing factors, and recommends corrective action, including facility repairs, upgrades, or new procedures.
  • Identifies placement and storage of hazardous materials; coordinates removal of ground‑handling equipment; participates in safety risk assessments; compiles hazard data for SMS reports.
  • Prepares detailed reports on safety/security incidents, injuries, and accidents. Attends briefings and shares information.
  • Conducts wildlife surveys and performs wildlife management and eradication duties, including habitat control, harassment removal, and depredation control.
  • Develops and administers training programs, SOPs, and other related programs; presents to pilots and airline tenants.
  • Monitors and coordinates maintenance and construction work sites on the airfield to ensure safety and security.
  • Performs other duties associated with the 9213 classification.

Nature of Work

The work involves stressful physical and emotional conditions, including adverse weather, exposure to radioactive materials, high noise levels, and rotating shifts (day, swing, night, weekends, and holidays). Overtime may be required, and emergency situations may require work outside scheduled hours.

How to Qualify

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination).
  • Experience: Two (2) years of safety and/or security operations experience at an airport, airbase, airline, or military base; of which six (6) months must include recent airfield operations experience.
  • License: Valid California Class C driver's license prior to employment.
  • Recent airfield operations experience (within the last seven (7) years) must include inspecting airfield surfaces, assets, and facilities for safety, security, and compliance, and developing recommendations to enhance operations.

Experience Substitution

  • Associate's degree in Aviation Management or related field substitutes for one (1) year of required safety/security experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Aviation Management or related field substitutes for two (2) years of required safety/security experience.
  • Six (6) months of recent airfield operations experience is still required.
  • A six‑month program equivalent to the City and County of San Francisco's Airside Operations Training Program may substitute for the required six (6) months of recent airfield operations experience.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of CFR Part 139, Part 77, and FAA Advisory Circulars 150 series.
  • Working knowledge of CFR Part 1542.
  • Expert‑level knowledge of aviation phraseology and public safety communications; ability to communicate via two‑way radio with FAA ATC and operations dispatchers.
  • Experience as a First Responder on an airfield, including direct incident response.
  • Knowledge of FEMA NIMS and Incident Command System (ICS).
  • Pilot's certificate.
  • Experience at commercial, domestic, regional, or international airports.
  • Excellent oral and written communications, including report writing.
  • AAAE Airport Certified Employee (ACE) Operations and/or ACE Security certification.

Selection Procedures

The selection process includes a multiple‑choice exam (100% weight) testing knowledge of FAA rules, airfield safety and security principles, and aptitude for reading maps, diagrams, and airfield plans. The exam can be taken at home or at a convenient location, but only within the specified time period. If you meet the minimum qualifications, you will be invited to the exam and given exam dates ranging from November 17 2025 to September 21 2026.
