Job Summary

Please note: This role requires onsite presence at UCSF 4 days per week. Under the direction of the Director of Labor and Employee Relations (LER), the Labor and Employee Relations Manager serves as a senior resource and manager supporting the mission of UCSF Health. The incumbent provides overall guidance to managers, supervisors and directors on all aspects of Employee and Labor Relations, including training, grievance handling, corrective action, and interpretation of HR policies, procedures and collective bargaining agreements. The role involves counseling managers and supervisors on work‑related issues and progressive corrective action in compliance with existing policies, procedures, collective bargaining agreements and the law.

Salary: $105,900 - $225,900 (Annual Rate). Final compensation is based on UC policy approvals.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • 7–10 years of employee and labor relations experience or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of lead and/or supervisory experience.
  • Advanced analytical skills and problem‑solving skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of employee relations practices, labor law and labor negotiation techniques.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills to develop relationships with department managers and other managers.
  • Proficient in interpreting collective bargaining agreements and personnel policies; knowledge of FMLA, ADA, FLSA.
  • Strong research skills in institutional policies, collective bargaining agreements and procedures.
  • Understanding of UCSF functions and complaint processing procedures.
  • Conflict resolution skills.
  • Effective written and oral communication; provides written analyses and oral presentations to management.
  • Organizational and problem‑solving skills.
  • Excellent judgment in responding to employee relations requests.
  • Ability to lead management in conflict and change management.
  • Ability to handle extremely difficult or volatile situations/individuals effectively.
  • High emotional intelligence.
  • High institutional knowledge and political savvy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or advanced degree in business, HR management or law.
  • Knowledge of other HR functions including compensation, employee relations, and benefits.
  • Healthcare labor and employee relations experience.
  • Public sector, higher education labor and employee relations experience.
