Senior Engineer – Water & Wastewater Design
Sherwood Design Engineers, a civil and environmental engineering firm, is seeking a senior engineer to join our Water & Wastewater team. The successful candidate will collaborate with multidisciplinary disciplines to develop sustainable infrastructure solutions, lead technical scope, and build client relationships.
Role Summary
The role requires a professional with proven expertise in water, wastewater, and water reuse infrastructure design, capable of leading projects from concept through construction administration, and providing technical guidance to team members.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of water, wastewater, and water reuse infrastructure, including conceptual, detailed design, and construction administration.
- Prepare technical reports, documentation, and presentations for stakeholders, regulatory agencies, and clients.
- Prepare and update plan set packages, conduct redlines for drafters, and ensure compliance with design standards.
- Perform hydraulic and process calculations, develop cost estimates, generate P&IDs, hydraulic and piping diagrams.
- Manage SCADA systems and automated controls for treatment plants.
- Support construction administration and quality assurance throughout project phases.
- Mentor and develop junior engineers, assign tasks, and evaluate performance.
- Serve as a client interface, conveying technical information professionally and timely.
Qualifications
- 12+ years of industry experience in water or wastewater engineering.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering.
- Strong background in physical and chemical treatment processes and water reuse.
- Experience across all project phases: conceptual design, detailed design, construction admin.
- Proficiency in technical report writing, procedural documentation, and stakeholder presentations.
- Experience preparing plan set packages and providing drafter redlines.
- Hands‑on experience with construction administration of water, wastewater and/or water reuse systems.
- Skilled in hydraulic and process calculations, cost estimation, and technical drawing creation.
- Familiarity with SCADA systems, automated controls, and plant operations.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to plan, prioritize, and multi‑task under general supervision.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred but not required.
Preferred Skills
- Consulting environment experience.
- Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
- Advanced treatment technologies: membrane filtration, UV disinfection.
- Knowledge of California and US water regulations and permitting processes.
- Startup, commissioning, and O&M of water systems.
- Hydraulic modeling of gravity and pressure pipe networks.
- Pump station design experience.
- Familiarity with Civil 3D, PCSWMM, SewerCAD, BioWin, GPS‑X.
- Leadership and project management experience.
- Professional certifications (LEED, Envision, Living Building Challenge, EcoDistricts) preferred.

- Ensure designs comply with applicable state and local regulations.
- Act as an effective interface between client and consulting team.

Compensation
The wage range for this role is $131,000 to $161,000, adjusted for geographic location.
