Position Summary

We are looking for an exceptional Human Resources Manager to join our growing firm. This role will be an essential member of the Coopers LLP team, supporting a growing plaintiff law firm as a one-person HR department. The role balances hands-on HR responsibilities with process improvement and operational support across the full spectrum of HR.

The HR Manager will report to the Operations Director and work closely with the Owners/Managing Partners and Firm leaders to support firm culture, recruit and develop talent, and ensure smooth day-to-day HR operations. Responsibilities include recruiting, onboarding, compliance, employee engagement, benefits administration, and vendor coordination, with opportunities to recommend and implement process improvements as the firm continues to grow.

Key Responsibilities

HR Operations & Employee Support

  • Manage day-to-day HR functions including recruiting, onboarding, employee relations, and offboarding.
  • Provide guidance to staff and managers on HR policies, benefits, and performance processes.
  • Support employee engagement initiatives that foster collaboration, inclusion, and morale.

Talent Acquisition & Development

  • Oversee recruiting for attorneys, paralegals, and staff, ensuring a positive candidate and new-hire experience.
  • Coordinate onboarding, orientation, and training logistics.
  • Assist managers with performance reviews, goal setting, and development planning.

Compensation, Benefits & Compliance

  • Administer payroll and benefits programs, serving as the main point of contact with vendors.
  • Assist with salary benchmarking and compensation adjustments.
  • Maintain compliance with California employment laws, including wage & hour, leave, and workplace postings.
  • Update and communicate HR policies and the employee handbook.
  • Maintain and improve HR processes and systems (HRIS, payroll, and related tools).
  • Partner with external vendors (benefits, payroll, IT, accounting) to ensure smooth service delivery.
  • Identify opportunities for efficiency and improved employee experience in HR processes.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Bachelor's degree in HR, Business Administration, or related field required; HR certification (SHRM-CP, PHR) preferred.
  • At least 5–7 years of progressive HR experience, ideally in a small or professional services organization.
  • Strong working knowledge of California employment law and HR best practices.
  • Proven ability to balance hands-on HR execution with process improvement.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and discretion in handling sensitive matters.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize effectively, and manage multiple tasks.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite; experience with HRIS/payroll systems.
  • Possess a roll-up-your-sleeves and relentless mentality.
  • Detail oriented and organized.

Ability to commute/relocate: While this position offers the flexibility of working remotely within the greater San Francisco Bay area, the ability to commute to the San Francisco office will be required on a consistent basis.
