The Cloud Engineer is responsible for configuring and operating UCSF cloud infrastructure services. The Cloud Engineer coordinates collaboration with developers, engineers, business partners, and key University stakeholders to provide high-quality cloud services. This role configures and supports workloads in the cloud, automates cloud infrastructure maintenance, and builds new operational monitoring capabilities. The Cloud Engineer serves as the technical administrator for hardware, operating systems, network management, and web systems, planning and coordinating the installation, configuration, and testing of components across central or departmental systems. The role involves applying advanced systems infrastructure concepts, resolving highly complex issues, evaluating new technologies with cost/benefit analyses, and potentially leading a team of systems or infrastructure professionals.
The final salary and offer components are subject to UC policy. Salary range: $138,000 - $207,000 (Annual Rate).
Department and Team
Department: UCSF Infrastructure Services (IS) – Platform Services team which manages system and cloud services and data center operations to support the University's missions. IS emphasizes secure, reliable IT services and customer-focused support.
Responsibilities
- Configure and operate UCSF cloud infrastructure services; collaborate with developers, engineers, business partners, and stakeholders to provide high-quality cloud services.
- Configure and support workloads in the cloud; automate cloud infrastructure maintenance; build and enhance operational monitoring capabilities.
- Act as technical administrator for hardware, operating systems, network management, and web systems; plan, coordinate, and test components across central or departmental systems.
- Apply advanced infrastructure concepts; resolve highly complex issues; perform cost/benefit analyses on new technologies; may lead a team of systems or infrastructure professionals.
- Ensure cloud services are operable, secure, and effective in support of UCSF's mission; model UCSF culture and values.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, MIS, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
- 3+ years in IT infrastructure, cloud computing, network administration/security, DevOps, web systems administration, or related areas.
- Experience migrating server workloads to cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and familiarity with virtualization.
- Experience with source control, basic testing, and CI techniques for cloud applications or infrastructure.
- Exposure to DevOps practices and deployment processes; experience supporting build, test, and release of applications in the delivery pipeline.
- Knowledge of APIs and cloud data provider integration; experience with Linux, Windows, and containerization/orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes).
- Experience with cloud-based automation tools and provisioning/maintenance of cloud infrastructure.
- Ability to adapt equipment/technology to user needs; understanding of how actions affect other systems and users.
- Experience with configuration, operation, and basic tuning of technology systems; familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) methodologies and tools (Terraform, Ansible, Chef, Puppet) and scripting.
- Strong customer service skills and ability to triage issues; ability to interpret service-level agreements and policies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to work with diverse stakeholders; strong organizational skills and ability to balance multiple projects.
- Problem-solving skills; ability to scope solutions, gather information, evaluate options, and make decisions with integrity.

Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, Computer Engineering, MIS, Electrical Engineering, etc.
- Experience in complex higher education and/or healthcare environments.
- Certifications: AWS/Microsoft/GCP Solutions Architect 1 or 2 (or equivalent).
