Overview

Box is seeking a Senior Staff Engineer, Conversion to join the Conversion Team. The Conversion Team, as part of the Box Storage Platform, designs, builds, and maintains services relating to the processing of customer content and the creation of representations. These representations power features across Box, including Box Intelligence, Preview, Watermarking, Realtime collaboration, Search, Automation, Workflows, and more. This role involves defining the next generation of architecture for this critical part of Box's infrastructure.

What You'll Do

  • Own and lead the conversion domain, including backend infrastructure and the conversions built on top of it
  • Contribute to and inform company objectives across teams using creative, effective, and diplomatic approaches
  • Be hands-on with code, including prototyping and contributing production changes
  • Collaborate with engineering leadership to develop strategies for evolving the platform
  • Work with Product Management to refine requirements and break down complex projects into deliverable units
  • Use a data-driven approach to devise strategies for processing customer content while balancing efficiency, quality, and security
  • Represent the Conversion team in architecture discussions and cross-functional forums

Who You Are

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent work experience
  • 12+ years of software development experience in distributed systems
  • 3+ years in an software architecture oriented role
  • Excited about solving complex technical problems using data-driven solutions
  • Owner mindset; value pride in work both technically and in team interactions
  • AI-first mindset; apply growth-oriented thinking and leverage AI to improve impact

Preferred Skills

  • Advanced media conversions, e.g., video
  • Extracting structured data from unstructured files (e.g., PDFs)
  • Processing data for use in AI/ML applications
