What you'll do

Cloudflare's solutions engineering function is responsible for collaborating with clients from early-stage ideation through to planning for production. Senior Solutions Engineers are expected to sit alongside our clients and contribute energy, ideas and opinions on solving hard problems in the industry. This may involve deep work on the art-of-the-possible and being willing to set aside preconceptions about what is impossible.

On any given day, the role provides opportunities to develop adjacent technology expertise and to master skills relating to technical and industry advocacy on behalf of clients. A key aspect is offering good practice guidance and adopting a deploy-to-production mindset, where operations are as important as the product.

As part of the broader solutions engineering community, you will work with peers who have deep subject-matter expertise and industry knowledge. As a senior member, you will contribute to a body of knowledge across networking, cybersecurity and edge computing, as well as industry analyses and perspectives.

For this role, the Solutions Engineering team focuses on large clients to develop deep understanding and partnership. The role emphasizes supporting local and central government, as well as select private sector clients where appropriate. Previous experience in supporting the public sector is beneficial, but not mandatory.

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience

Solutions Engineers come from IT, engineering, software development, product management, financial consulting, customer support and project delivery. We value diversity of experience and genuine curiosity for our technology. You are passionate about technology and can explain complex technical concepts in easy-to-understand terms. You are curious and enjoy building, and you look forward to helping customers realise the full promise of Cloudflare.

On the Solutions Engineering team, you will work in a collaborative environment where diverse strengths are welcomed and everyone helps each other.

You should have a good understanding of how to manage a technical sales cycle, from qualification and discovery to solutioning and positioning Cloudflare technology, including demos or proofs of concept if needed. You should help customers form an informed opinion on the best solution, with an eye on what could come next.

Experience, including a combination of the skills below:

• Showing up in the right way: bringing a positive attitude and energy to help clients and the team succeed.
• 5+ years of experience in the IT industry (mid-level engineering experience).
• Ability to manage a project, meet deadlines, and prioritise between competing demands.
• Demonstrating empathy with customers and quickly identifying challenges and pain points.
• Understanding of how the Internet works, including:
• Know the differences between TCP and UDP, and understand which applications may favour one over the other
• Explain the difference between authoritative and recursive DNS
• Why TLS (SSL) plays an important role on today's Internet, and a solid understanding of HTTP and related client/server quirks
• Understanding of how customers make buying decisions and how to explain ROI.
• Knowledge of the competitive landscape for one or more: DDoS, CDN, Performance, DNS, Developer platform or Zero-Trust/SASE service providers.
• Willingness to travel in-region (approximately 15–30 days per quarter) to client offices, conferences and events.

Bonus!

• Demonstrated experience with edge compute, web development or scripting languages (e.g. Python, JavaScript, Bash) and a desire to expand those skills;
• Exposure to emerging technical landscape trends such as machine learning, GenAI, DevOps, security operations, etc.
