Job Description

Under general administrative direction, manages, and directs the activities of professional and technical engineering, architecture and/or landscape architecture personnel performing highly technical and administrative functions in connection with the design, construction, operation and maintenance of projects and systems.

The essential functions of the class may vary depending upon assignment and may include:

• Directing, supervising, and coordinating the design of complex engineering, architecture, or landscape architecture projects.
• Conducting interviews, selecting, training, monitoring, and evaluating departmental staff and consultants.
• Planning, organizing, and directing the administration and management of contracts.
• Overseeing and reviewing the preparation of complex construction contracts and documents.
• Establishing and implementing departmental policies, procedures, and administrative directives.
• Managing projects and coordinating activities between units and other groups.
• Consulting with technical staff, conducting meetings, and representing the City.
• Writing, reviewing, and approving documents.
• Supervising the review of shop drawings by contractors and field inspection staff.
• Performing other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

1. Seven (7) years verifiable professional engineering work experience (e.g., civil, electrical, mechanical, sanitary/chemical/environmental, transportation/traffic, or structural), of which four (4) years must be as a licensed professional engineer in the specialty you are applying for. Two (2) of the seven (7) years must be equivalent to the City and County of San Francisco class 5241 Engineer in the specialty you are applying for.
2. Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California with a License Type as Mechanical Engineering.
3. Notes: Some engineering positions may require a certificate issued by ICBO, ICC, or equivalent; some positions may require additional licensing or experience in related areas. Most positions require a valid California Driver's License.
4. Substitutions for Engineering Specialties: A Master's Degree may substitute for 1 year of work experience; a PhD may substitute for 2 years.
5. This note applies to candidates applying from out of state: qualified applicants may file; waiver provided until California license is presented.

Working Conditions and Verification

Some positions may require lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, working in high places and confined spaces, exposure to weather, and working various schedules including weekends, holidays, nights, or overtime.

All work experience, education, training and other information substantiating meeting minimum qualifications must be included on the application by the filing deadline. Selection Procedures

After application submission, qualified candidates must complete all steps to advance, including:

• Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire with Training and Experience Evaluation (100%): Applicants must complete the questionnaire as part of the online application, in addition to the official application.
• The supplementary questionnaire is used to evaluate minimum qualifications and determine final ranking on the eligible list/score report.

Eligible List/Score Report: A confidential list will be created for certification purposes. The eligible list may be public upon request after exhaustion or resolution of referrals. The list is subject to change as directed by the HR Director or Civil Service Commission and remains in effect for 6 months, with possible extension.
