Overview
Assistant Professional Researcher - Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies (IHPS) at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is seeking applications for an Assistant Professional Researcher. We are looking for an early-career investigator whose work advances understanding of how individuals and families experience serious and chronic illness, and how these illnesses are addressed in the health care system and community, by bridging clinical and social domains.
The researcher's portfolio will focus on medical anthropological methodologies, early detection, diagnosis and diagnostic journeys, dementia, the healthcare workforce, immigrant and refugee health, caregiving, and long-term services and supports. The successful candidate is expected to lead independent research using rigorous qualitative, ethnographic, mixed-methods, and policy analysis approaches, as well as community-engaged research design to evaluate the impacts of policies, programs, and clinical practices in dementia. This is a full-time academic appointment in the Professional Researcher series. Appointees in this series conduct independent research equivalent in quality to that required for the Professor series and may serve as Principal Investigators.
Responsibilities
- Develop and lead innovative research projects aligned with the mission of IHPS.
- Apply advanced qualitative and ethnographic methods to clinical and policy-relevant research questions.
- Publish research findings in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals and disseminate results to inform policymakers, healthcare organizations, and community stakeholders.
- Advance a program of research examining intersections of aging, dementia, caregiving, and health inequities, with a focus on the healthcare workforce.
- Mentor junior team members and contribute to the broader intellectual and collaborative community at IHPS and UCSF.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to strengthen research quality and impact.
Qualifications
- A PhD degree in medical anthropology, sociology, public health, or a related discipline by the time of hire.
- Minimum 5 years of experience applying qualitative and ethnographic methodologies in clinical, policy, or community research settings.
- A strong publication history in medical anthropology, health policy, aging and dementia, and health equity.
- Demonstrated experience in interdisciplinary collaborations across academic, clinical, and community sectors.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Interest in building a health services or policy research portfolio with a multidisciplinary team of social scientists, policy experts, and clinicians.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Deep understanding of qualitative and ethnographic methodologies.
- Applicant materials must list (pending) qualifications upon submission.
Preferred Qualifications
- Research portfolio focused on serious and chronic illness experience, dementia and older adults, caregiving, and health behaviors.
- Experience developing and submitting extramural grant applications (e.g., NIH, RWJF, aging and dementia foundations).
- Track record of securing research funding as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator.
- Experience with community-based research and dissemination of findings to policymakers and advocacy groups.
- Experience supervising senior staff and researchers.
Compensation
Salary range information is provided by the University of California; see Table 13B for the salary range. A reasonable estimate for this position is $93,400 - $122,100.
