Overview

Senior Software Engineer - Hardware Developer Experience (HDX) is a growing internal team that serves developers working with and testing hardware devices. We develop internal software products, firmware tools, test software infrastructure, and developer infrastructure to serve our internal customer teams, including the Android platform teams, firmware teams, QA teams, and app development teams.

You Will

• Develop and maintain software test platforms for hardware-in-the-loop testing, ensuring high reliability and performance.
• Oversee the entirety of your features, including component design, implementation, automated testing, rollout, documentation, and maintenance.
• Provide technical support and triage issues related to all tools Hardware DX owns.
• Occasionally contribute to and review local and cloud developer environments.
• Occasionally contribute to and review internal-facing web applications.
• Give technical direction to projects.
• Hold yourself and your teammates accountable to high engineering standards that enable Square to safely process billions of dollars in payments and protect sensitive customer data.
• Work closely with other engineers, technicians, and product managers to develop excellent product experiences.

You Have

• 8+ years of relevant software development experience (or additional academic experience).
• Proficiency in Python, as it will be the primary language used.
• Strong computer science fundamentals including Linux/Unix systems, networking protocols, data structures, algorithms, and hardware-software interfaces that enable you to debug complex issues across software and hardware boundaries.
• The ability and passion to discover and drive projects that increase developer velocity.
• Strong ability to collaborate within the team and with adjacent teams, including experience with version control, release management, and coordinating dependency updates across multiple repositories.
• A passion for building and shipping internal tools and products and working directly with internal customers to rapidly improve their development experience.

• Experience with Android Open Source Project (AOSP) development and communication protocols.
• Experience with shipping software for Linux and MacOS (arm, x86).
• Experience with Kotlin for scripting and testing tools.
• Familiarity with CI/CD platforms such as Buildkite and Jenkins.
• Experience with cloud technologies like Terraform, Docker, and AWS (EC2).

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on location. US salaries are categorized by zone designations, with starting pay determined based on skills, experience, location, and market conditions. Zone ranges include:

• Zone A: $217,800—$326,800 USD
• Zone B: $207,000—$310,400 USD
• Zone C: $196,100—$294,100 USD
• Zone D: $185,200—$277,800 USD
