Description:

O'Connor Environmental, Inc. (www.oe-i.com) is seeking a professional engineer licensed in California with experience in hydrologic & hydraulic modeling and design and implementation of river restoration projects. The engineer will join our small team of scientists & technicians working on a variety of water resource and habitat restoration projects in northern California and the Pacific Northwest. The successful candidate will work closely with OEl's Senior Hydrologist to compile, analyze, and interpret a wide variety of GIS and timeseries datasets and develop integrated surface water/groundwater and 2-dimensional hydraulic models to inform habitat restoration planning and design, mitigate flood hazards, evaluate sediment transport processes, and predict climate change impacts.

The position involves independent analytical work with periodic meetings along with field characterization and monitoring tasks; work schedule, office space, and computer hardware/software support to be arranged based on individual needs. Critical qualifications include experience with numerical modeling and ArcGIS, attention to detail, good organization, communication, and technical writing skills, and an inquisitive mind with a passion for scientific investigation and problem solving. The position is a for a hybrid home-office location in the western Oregon or northern California area; alternative workstation locations in the western U.S may be considered for strong candidates. Desired qualifications:

  • Engineering degree and California PE license (or ability to obtain through reciprocity)
  • Two or more years of experience in a consulting, engineering or other technical/scientific organization; recent graduate-level academic work may substitute for work experience.
  • Knowledge of basic principles of hydrology and familiarity with geosciences.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a small project team
  • Ability to clearly communicate scientific information in oral and written formats to a wide variety of audiences
  • Proficient with a variety of spatial analysis tasks using ArcGIS, ArcPy, Python, etc.
  • Experience developing habitat restoration design plans and specifications
  • Experience managing and analyzing diverse spatial and temporal datasets
  • Experience writing scripts to automate data processing tasks
  • Experience developing, calibrating, and applying hydraulic models (MIKE 11, MIKE 21, HECĀ­ RAS, FLOW 2D)
  • Experience developing, calibrating, and applying hydrologic, groundwater, and integrated surface water/groundwater models (MIKE SHE, GSFLOW, MODFLOW, HEC-HMS)
  • Experience conducting field investigations-hydrology, hydrogeology and/or geomorphology
  • Experience performing habitat restoration, flood mitigation, sediment transport, and/or climate change investigations
  • Knowledge of methods for quantifying freshwater/estuarine habitat for salmonids
