About The Role:

Our client, a globally recognized multi-disciplinary design consultancy specializing in wayfinding, planning, and spatial experiences, is seeking a dynamic and versatile Design Director to join their close-knit team in San Francisco.

In this role, you will take leadership of the design process, from concept to delivery, across a diverse, multi-sector portfolio within wayfinding and information design. Based in the vibrant and fast-growing San Francisco Bay Area studio, you'll collaborate with a talented, expanding team to ensure projects are delivered to the highest standard. You will also work closely with high-profile blue chip clients, Project Leads, and leadership departments across their international offices, with occasional travel to project sites and industry events.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead wayfinding and information design projects from concept to delivery
  • Act as both Project Lead and discipline lead, and take on Creative Director duties when required
  • Oversee project planning with Project Managers, including objectives, milestones, schedules, and deliverables
  • Delegate tasks to the wider team, providing oversight, support, and mentoring
  • Build strong client relationships, leading communications, presentations, and workshops with stakeholders
  • Monitor project scope and support fee negotiations with clients
  • Liaise with subcontractors and suppliers to ensure smooth delivery
  • Manage and support junior staff through effective line management

Key Skills/Requirements:

  • Proven experience leading complex design projects, ideally within wayfinding, information, or spatial design
  • Strong leadership and client-facing skills
  • Excellent project management capabilities, balancing multiple priorities under pressure
  • Confident in presenting ideas and leading workshops with diverse stakeholders
  • Highly organised, with a strong eye for detail and a solutions-focused mindset
  • Collaborative team player with experience mentoring and developing junior designers
