Job Title: Director of Software and Machine Learning

Location: San Francisco Bay Area (Onsite required 3+ days per week)

Our client is developing next-generation metrology systems that integrate real-time sensor data, intelligent software, and machine learning with industrial-grade hardware. Their platform spans embedded systems, edge computing, real-time data ingestion, device-level inference, cloud-based infrastructure, and end-to-end machine learning pipelines. Their mission is to accelerate innovation in advanced manufacturing and clean energy through fast, actionable, data-driven insights.

Position Summary:

They are seeking a Director of Software and Machine Learning to lead the company's end-to-end software and ML strategy — from edge device firmware and embedded AI to scalable cloud systems and deployment pipelines. This is a hands-on leadership role, ideal for someone who can architect complex systems, manage hybrid teams, and work across the full product stack in a fast-moving environment at the intersection of capital equipment, optics, and applied machine learning.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead and mentor the Software and Machine Learning (SWML) team
• Own the SWML roadmap in collaboration with Product, Applications, and Hardware teams
• Architect software systems across embedded, edge, and cloud environments
• Oversee software projects across firmware integration, UI tools, real-time data handling, and ML deployment
• Manage external software contractors, ensuring quality, budget, and timeline alignment
• Guide code review and quality assurance practices
• Drive performance strategies around data throughput, compression, and latency
• Participate in customer-facing engagements and define both custom and scalable software solutions
• Support system security, deployment robustness, and device hardening
• Represent the company at industry events and customer sites (~10% travel)

Requirements:

• B.S. or graduate degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, or a related field
• 10+ years in software development, including 3+ years in a leadership role
• Experience architecting hardware-integrated software and real-time systems
• Deep understanding of cloud infrastructure and distributed system design
• Familiarity with ML fundamentals, including model deployment, streaming inference, and performance optimization
• Excellent leadership, communication, and collaboration skills
• Willingness to travel internationally for customer engagements and industry events
• High adaptability and a self-starting mindset
