$306,000.00/yr - $350,000.00/yr

Reporting to the VP, Intellectual Property, the Executive Director, Intellectual Property will serve as a senior leader within the Legal function. This attorney is responsible for helping develop and drive IP strategy across all phases of drug discovery, development, and commercialization, and will facilitate IP integration with R&D, BD, and Commercial functions. The Executive Director, Intellectual Property will help shape RevMed's long-term IP portfolio to sustain competitive differentiation globally.

Location: Redwood City, CA. This is a hybrid role that requires at least 3 days in the office. Local candidates strongly preferred.

Key Responsibilities

  • Help create and execute IP strategies aligned with corporate objectives and long-term growth.
  • Approach IP creation and protection with a strategic mindset by anticipating internal and/or external business challenges, competitive and legal risks and opportunities and offering creative solutions.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen the company's IP portfolio through engagement with project teams and collaboration partners and serve as a principal legal strategist for complex patent, regulatory exclusivity, and competitive positioning matters across the portfolio.
  • Drive IP policy development and risk mitigation strategies that shape company-wide decision-making.
  • Build effective partnerships with stakeholders across all phases of research, development and commercialization to provide clear, strategic business-enabling IP advice.
  • Solve problems practically with ability to facilitate and contribute to collaborative decision-making processes and work effectively on cross-functional teams.
  • Serve as a key advisor to senior management and other personnel on important IP implications of corporate transactions, alliances, and global expansion efforts.
  • Counsel internal clients, including other members of the Legal Department and senior management, on intellectual property risks and opportunities in patentability, freedom-to-operate, infringement, validity, and regulatory exclusivity analyses.
  • Build and mentor IP team members, fostering a culture of cooperation, technical excellence, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Manage IP needs of a business area and/or manage aspects of the RevMed patent portfolio, depending on experience.
  • Advise on adversarial proceedings including IP disputes, litigation, IPRs, PGRs and European/foreign oppositions and similar matters.
  • Partner with BD team members in IP diligence requests and agreement work and follow through with Alliance Management teammates in navigating IP issues in resulting collaborations.
  • Actively lead and establish governance frameworks and operating models, identifying opportunities to enhance effectiveness of IP Department practice and operations to scale with company growth.
  • Manage our growing trademark portfolio.
  • Educate and advise senior management and other personnel on important IP issues and advance IP awareness.
  • Manage outside counsel and other external resources for quality work product, value, and efficiency.
  • Review publications, presentations, press releases and other materials for clearance.

Qualifications and Key Attributes

  • J.D. from ABA accredited law school and a member in good standing of the California Bar, or eligible for in-house registration in California.
  • Admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Minimum 15 years relevant IP experience: mix of law firm and in-house experience preferred.
  • Undergraduate or advanced degree in biological science, biochemistry, chemistry, or other field relevant to pharmaceuticals, life sciences or biotechnology preferred.
  • Experience in managing IP practitioners/staff required.
  • Experience with adversarial IP proceedings, including IP disputes, litigation, IPRs, PGRs and European/foreign oppositions and similar matters required.
  • Proven track record of developing and driving IP strategy for commercial-stage or globally launched therapies.
  • Possess excellent judgment, negotiation and communication (verbal and written) skills; able to simplify the complex and adapt to audiences with varying levels of legal fluency.
  • Strong prioritization skills and ability to effectively manage a diverse workload.

  • Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills that inspire trust and alignment across functions.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and operate with high ethical standards and professionalism.

  • Experience at a publicly traded life sciences organization with global operations preferred.
  • Global therapeutic launch experience or commercial product experience preferred.
  • Experience in building and scaling IP functions in high-growth or public companies preferred.
