Revolution Medicines is a clinical-stage precision oncology company focused on developing novel targeted therapies to inhibit frontier targets in RAS-addicted cancers. The company's R&D pipeline comprises RAS(ON) Inhibitors designed to suppress diverse oncogenic variants of RAS proteins, and RAS Companion Inhibitors for use in combination treatment strategies. As a new member of the Revolution Medicines team, you will join other outstanding professionals in a tireless commitment to patients with cancers harboring mutations in the RAS signaling pathway.

The Opportunity:

The Executive Director, Intellectual Property will serve as a senior leader within the Legal function, responsible for helping develop and drive IP strategy across all phases of drug discovery, development, and commercialization. Reporting to the VP, Intellectual Property, this individual will facilitate IP integration with R&D, BD, and Commercial functions, and help shape RevMed's long-term IP portfolio to sustain competitive differentiation globally.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Help create and execute IP strategies aligned with corporate objectives and long-term growth.
  • Approach IP creation and protection with a strategic mindset by anticipating internal and/or external business challenges, competitive and legal risks and opportunities and offering creative solutions.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen the company's IP portfolio through engagement with project teams and collaboration partners, and serve as a principal legal strategist for complex patent, regulatory exclusivity, and competitive positioning matters across the portfolio.
  • Drive IP policy development and risk mitigation strategies that shape company-wide decision-making.
  • Build effective partnerships with stakeholders across all phases of research, development and commercialization to provide clear, strategic business-enabling IP advice.
  • Solve problems practically with ability to facilitate and contribute to collaborative decision-making processes and work effectively on cross-functional teams.
  • Serve as a key advisor to senior management and other personnel on important IP implications of corporate transactions, alliances, and global expansion efforts.
  • Counsel internal clients, including other members of the Legal Department and senior management, on intellectual property risks and opportunities in patentability, freedom-to-operate, infringement, validity, and regulatory exclusivity analyses.
  • Build and mentor IP team members, fostering a culture of cooperation, technical excellence, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Manage IP needs of a business area and/or manage aspects of the RevMed patent portfolio, depending on experience.
  • Advise on adversarial proceedings including IP disputes, litigation, IPRs, PGRs and European/foreign oppositions and similar matters.
  • Partner with BD team members in IP diligence requests and agreement work, and follow through with Alliance Management teammates in navigating IP issues in resulting collaborations.
  • Actively lead and establish governance frameworks and operating models, identifying opportunities to enhance effectiveness of IP Department practice and operations to scale with company growth.
  • Manage our growing trademark portfolio.
  • Educate and advise senior management and other personnel on important IP issues and advance IP awareness.
  • Manage outside counsel and other external resources for quality work product, value, and efficiency.
  • Review publications, presentations, press releases and other materials for clearance.

Required Skills, Experience and Education:

  • J.D. from ABA accredited law school and a member in good standing of the California Bar, or eligible for in-house registration in California admitted to USPTO, and at least one state bar.
  • Admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Minimum 15 years relevant IP experience: mix of law firm and in-house experience preferred.
  • Undergraduate or advanced degree in biological science, biochemistry, chemistry, or other field relevant to pharmaceuticals, life sciences or biotechnology preferred.
  • Experience in managing IP practitioners/staff required.
  • Experience with adversarial IP proceedings, including IP disputes, litigation, IPRs, PGRs and European/foreign oppositions and similar matters required.
  • Proven track record of developing and driving IP strategy for commercial-stage or globally launched therapies.
  • Possess excellent judgment, negotiation and communication (verbal and written) skills; able to simplify the complex and adapt to audiences with varying levels of legal fluency.
  • Strong prioritization skills and ability to effectively manage a diverse workload.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience at a publicly traded life sciences organization with global operations.
  • Global therapeutic launch experience or commercial product experience.
  • Experience in building and scaling IP functions in high-growth or public companies.

The base salary range for this full-time position is $306,000 to $350,000 for candidates working onsite at our headquarters in Redwood City, California. The range displayed on each job posting is intended to be the salary for an individual working onsite in Redwood City and will be adjusted for the local market in which a candidate is based. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Individual pay is determined by multiple factors, including job-related skills, experience, market dynamics, and relevant education or training.

Please note that base salary is one part of the overall total rewards program at RevMed, which includes competitive cash compensation, robust equity awards, strong benefits, and significant learning and development opportunities.
