LAEP STUDENT ASSISTANT (STDT) JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Department: Othering & Belonging Institute
Duration: Fall 2025 & Spring 2026

Position: Student Data Analyst (SDA)
Hours: 7 hours/week (17.5% FTE)

Location: Remote

Compensation: 1st & 2nd years = $26/hour; 3rd & 4th years = $27/hour

Eligibility: LAEP-eligible UC Berkeley undergraduate students only (must have an LAEP/work-study award of at least $6,000)

The Othering & Belonging Institute (OBI) is a hub of researchers and community networks focused on creating a world where all people belong. OBI works to identify and challenge barriers to an inclusive, just, and sustainable society to foster transformative change. Its Equity Metrics Program (EM) emphasizes empirical analysis to highlight social inequities and develops data-driven tools to measure social phenomena such as segregation.

The EM team seeks a student researcher to assist with data analysis related to segregation, housing, and zoning projects. These projects uncover racial and social inequities through data and analytics. The ideal candidate should be fluent in R or Python, experienced in data collection and cleaning, and familiar with public datasets. A strong interest in social justice issues is essential.

Required Qualifications:

  • UC Berkeley LAEP-eligible undergraduate student (must have an LAEP/work-study award of at least $6,000)
  • Excellent research and writing skills, including literature reviews and case studies
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with staff and partners
  • Strong organizational skills for managing files and tasks, with the ability to work independently
  • Interest in social justice issues
  • Fluent in R or Python, with experience in data manipulation and synthesis
  • Experience working with public datasets such as Census Bureau, NCES, BLS, etc.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of statistical concepts
  • Ability to create clear visualizations using appropriate tools
  • Web mapping skills with Leaflet and Mapbox
  • Research methodology design and implementation skills

Responsibilities:

  • Use R/Python to extract data for the US Segregation project and fulfill data requests from researchers and policymakers
  • Modify existing code or develop new scripts for data extraction and metadata management
  • Research zoning reform initiatives and update related databases and web resources
  • Assist with other related tasks as assigned by the EM supervisor
