Position Summary

The Executive Director of Facilities is responsible for providing strategic leadership and operational oversight of property and facility management across the YMCA of San Francisco. Under the supervision of the Vice President of Real Estate, Capital Assets, and Facilities, this position ensures that YMCA facilities are safe, clean, accessible, and well maintained. The Executive Director collaborates with the Buildings & Grounds teams and manages site-specific operations, infrastructure, preventive maintenance, and construction projects— some exceeding $500,000. This role also leads capital planning, vendor and contractor coordination, regulatory compliance, risk mitigation, and budget management.

Key Responsibilities

Facilities Operations & Safety

  • Direct day-to-day facility operations across multiple sites, including safety systems, mechanical infrastructure, and custodial functions.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws, codes, and YMCA policies regarding accessibility, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Lead safety initiatives and inspections, including OSHA compliance, ADA facility improvements, and emergency preparedness.
  • Manage facility-related projects f rom planning to completion; supervise vendor performance and contract compliance.
  • Oversee renovations, shutdowns, construction, and equipment upgrades in collaboration with branch teams.

Leadership & Team Management

  • Supervise, coach, and support a team of facilities staff; foster a culture of inclusion, safety, and continuous learning.
  • Provide training and professional development for team members in accordance with YMCA values and equity goals.
  • Lead recruiting and performance management ef forts with a commitment to equity and accessibility.

Fiscal Management & Planning

  • Develop and manage operating and capital budgets; monitor expenditures and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate records and reporting systems for inspections, contracts, equipment, and preventive maintenance.
  • Serve as a key liaison between association leadership, vendors, contractors, and local branches.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders in a manner that reflects the YMCA's core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Support branch-level programming and events requiring facilities coordination.
  • Participate in regional and national YMCA initiatives related to sustainability, safety, and property stewardship.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and professional experience in facilities management, construction, engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in facilities operations, including staff f supervision, safety compliance, and budget oversight.
  • Experience with mechanical systems, building inf restructure, and preventive maintenance planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead inclusive teams and build relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and work order management systems.
  • Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid certification and Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification within designated time rams.
  • Must be able to participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation and respond to facilities-related emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Facilities Management Certification (e.g., FMP, IFMA) or YMCA Leadership Certification.
  • Experience working in nonprofit, mission-driven environments or with multi-site facilities.
