The Water Recovery Laboratory team consists of 5 staff members who share responsibilities for sampling and testing in support of the City and County of Broomfield's wastewater monitoring program. As a team, we value teamwork and a laid back work environment while remaining committed to serving the community through our high-quality analytical work, ensuring Broomfield's wastewater meets regulatory standards to discharge.We are looking for a Part Time Water Recovery Water Quality Technician to join our team Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm. This position is primarily responsible for routine sampling, laboratory support, and performing standard laboratory tests to ensure the quality and compliance of Broomfield's wastewater.Total Compensation PackageSalary Range: $34.19 - $46.25/hourFree Recreation Center Pass (Gym & Pool)Paid Time Off6% employer retirement matchMedical, dental, & vision insuranceWellness discount on insurance premiums availableEssential Required Tasks/Examples of Duties* Performs manual chemistry, routine microbiological analyses, and basic instrumental analyses, and supports planned water and wastewater monitoring programs to assess water quality and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.* Prepares various chemical reagents, analytical standards, and microbiological media.* Performs basic laboratory computations needed to calculate volumes and concentrations, and to convert raw data to the required format.* Conducts basic chemical and/or microbiological analyses with precision and accuracy, using standard written procedures or as directed by the supervisor.* Evaluates results for reasonableness and conformance with acceptance criteria and follows-up appropriately.* Cleans glassware, sample bottles, and equipment following EPA protocols for intended use. May include acid washing, sterilization, or other special preparation procedures. Puts cleaned equipment away in designated storage areas. Washes/disinfects working surfaces, and cleans sampling equipment, refrigerators, fume hoods, and instrumentation.* Collects samples from various locations such as reservoirs, streams, ponds, wells, water distribution systems, water and/or wastewater plant unit processes, wastewater plant influent and effluent discharge.* Water Only: Operates a boat to collect pond and reservoir samples.* Performs field measurements as needed; processes and preserves samples from various analyses.* Calculates, reviews, and interprets data using quality assurance procedures; maintains records in the laboratory database.* Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Uses all required safety equipment.* May participate in public events such as National Night Out and Broomfield Days.Minimum QualificationsEducation* Associate's Degree or 60 semester hours in chemistry, biology, environmental science, chemical engineering, or a closely related field that includes considerable laboratory experience - requiredExperience* 1 year experience in analytical laboratory analyses applicable to water and wastewater and environmental monitoring programs - preferredYears of related experience may be substituted for required education, however education cannot be substituted for the necessary work experience. Candidates must meet the minimum required years of work experience.NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Must be at least 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and safe driving record for continued employment. New hires must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes: in-person or virtual interviews, reference checks, background checks including local police check, sex-offender registry, and DMV check.Working Conditions* Work is generally scheduled Monday through Thursday with some weekend, evening, and holiday work required.* In-person customer/client/team meetings required.* Regular, predictable attendance required* Work is performed at City/County work locations with the ability to perform some duties remotely in accordance with Broomfield's remote work policy* Physical demands are described as medium (exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects)* May occasionally be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, or airborne particles.* Tasks may require use of a computer for several hours.* Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus, color vision, and peripheral vision.* The noise level in the environment is moderate.* Travel by automobile is required to attend meetings.* May be exposed to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy weather conditions during sampling tasks.* Must negotiate hillsides, rocks, or other obstacles while carrying sampling equipment.
