Position Information

The full salary range for the Assistant Fire Marshal is $90,400 - $169,000 annually. However, the expected pay scale for this position is from $90,400 - $142,392 annually. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs. The Assistant Fire Marshal provides professional level fire protection services to the Campus in two major categories: 1) design and construction of new and/or modified facilities, and 2) comprehensive fire prevention services for existing facilities. The Fire Prevention Program incorporates campus compliance of fire protection codes, related regulations, industry standards, and best practices. The Program has campus-wide impact and extends to all UCR owned or occupied facilities, both contiguous and off-site locations. The Assistant Fire Marshal as a designated campus Fire Marshal can review and approve plans and specifications and direct construction and maintenance inspections for field deputies. Upon completion of all inspection criteria, the Assistant issues corrections or approvals for the inspection process. Recommends occupancy approval for the Lead Campus Fire Marshal upon completed inspections and construction required certifications. This is the lead inspector for the campus construction program. Under general direction of the Lead Campus Fire Marshal, the Assistant Fire Marshal acts as a delegated authority for external regulatory agencies to approve/deny activities that may impact the campus core mission. The Assistant is a Designated Campus Fire Marshal (DCFM) and implements the University of California Office of the President (UCOP), State Fire Marshal (SFM) Memorandum of Agreement (MOU), and acts on behalf of the Lead Designated Campus Fire Marshal as needed. Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff. As a University employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time. Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements.

  • Advanced or expert knowledge/understanding of broad range of EH&S fields and familiarity with all EH&S fields.
  • Advanced or expert knowledge and skill in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards, guidelines and, as appropriate, recommend organization policy.
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills, including advanced political acumen and skill to effectively communicate with diverse constituencies in a highly political environment.
  • Advanced skill to effectively represent the organization to state and federal authorities, and community groups.
  • Advanced analytical and organizational skills to organize, prioritize and manage the successful completion of projects within budget and time constraints.
  • Advanced skill in mentoring or overseeing the work of other EH&S technical and professional staff.
  • Advanced skill to appropriately use technology and relevant scientific equipment as required.

Custom Scope

Serves as the technical expert in one of the following fields/disciplines: Laboratory Safety, Radiation Safety, Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, General Safety including Pest Management, Industrial Hygiene, Ergonomics, Hazardous Materials, Hazardous Waste, or Environmental Protection. Problems are complex and may require creation of new methodologies by applying professional EH&S knowledge and/or expertise. Serves as technical expert in the development/implementation of programs within one of these fields/disciplines. May represent EH&S regarding the field/discipline at meetings and conferences involving academic compliance committees, campus, system wide, local government, state and federal levels of authority in matters related to field of expertise. Decision-making is based on established procedures and integration/interpretation of relevant laws, regulations and organizational policy; professional best practices; relevant science methodology, impact on other EH&S programs; and senior management approvals. Decisions may impact other EH&S programs, departments, segments of the organization and/or organization-wide.
