Pay range: $85,000 to $139,300 per year (see detailed ranges below)

Position Levels and Starting Ranges:

  • Substation Relay Engineer I - $85,000 - $97,200
  • Substation Relay Engineer II - $92,900 - $111,500
  • Substation Relay Engineer III - $104,500 - $125,400
  • Substation Relay Engineer IV - $116,100 - $139,300

Position Overview:

The Relay Engineer will design, test, and maintain relay protection systems for electrical power systems. Responsibilities include developing protective relay settings, conducting coordination studies, troubleshooting relay malfunctions, collaborating with engineering teams, and participating in commissioning activities. Requires a strong background in electrical engineering, relay technologies, safety, and compliance with NERC standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and modify protective relay test procedures complying with NERC/WECC
  • Complete regulatory compliance tasks
  • Review relay test results and troubleshoot failures
  • Perform fault studies and evaluate system performance
  • Document testing procedures and results for audits
  • Develop standards and tools for design support
  • Coordinate with project teams
  • Provide quality control and on-site technical support
  • Travel up to 30%, work extended hours, participate in on-call rotation
  • Support management in work planning and project execution
  • Ensure safety and compliance with company standards

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • PE license or ability to obtain one; recent graduates encouraged to apply
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and relay databases
  • Knowledge of power systems, microprocessor equipment, NESC, NERC, FERC, WECC guidelines
  • Valid driver's license and good safety record

Position Levels and Expectations:

Engineer I: Entry level, basic relay design, assisting with settings and coordination studies.

Engineer II: Independent project management, relay troubleshooting, support commissioning, pursuit of PE.

Engineer III: Advanced analysis, mentoring, expertise in relay settings, PE required.

Engineer IV: Technical leadership, process improvement, peer review, advanced system design, PE strongly preferred.
