Description:

Laser Engineer - Junior candidates welcome - relocation allowed

About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated Laser Engineer to join our San Francisco-based team developing next-generation laser systems. This is a hands-on, onsite position where you'll play a key role in bringing cutting-edge laser concepts from initial design through prototyping, validation, and scalable manufacturing.

You will work closely with cross-functional teams across engineering, production, and customer support to design, build, test, and refine advanced laser systems—including fiber and DPSS lasers. Your work will directly impact product performance, reliability, and manufacturability in fast-evolving customer environments.

Responsibilities

  • Formulate, model, design, and develop laser concepts and prototypes based on evolving customer requirements.
  • Execute alignment, stability testing, and reliability validation of laser systems.
  • Collaborate with production to resolve build issues and improve yield and consistency.
  • Provide technical support to service teams, conduct failure analyses, and implement design improvements based on customer feedback.
  • Prepare progress updates and manage timelines across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Travel occasionally for on-site customer support and troubleshooting (as needed).

Required Qualifications

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Engineering Physics, Photonics, Optics, or related technical field.
  • 1+ years of hands-on experience designing, aligning, and troubleshooting lasers or complex optical systems.
  • Strong background in DPSS and/or fiber laser technologies.
  • Experience in optical system modeling and simulation (e.g., using Zemax).
  • Familiarity with optical components and materials (UV to IR), metrology tools, and system integration.
  • Solid understanding of polarization optics, beam shaping, diffraction gratings, acousto- and electro-optic devices.
  • Ability to perform structured lab experimentation and detailed data analysis.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with ultrafast laser systems and diagnostic tools.
  • Knowledge of high-power fiber laser modeling and design.
  • Proven ability to validate optical models with real-world data.
  • Prior experience working in a production or manufacturing-oriented laser environment.

If you're excited to build transformative laser technology and thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative R&D environment, we'd love to hear from you.
