Departmental Overview

Facilities Services works to continuously improve the campus in partnership with all members of the University community to ensure that classrooms, laboratories, and offices support teaching, learning, and research. With over 500 dedicated staff members serving over 10 million square feet and 1100 acres, Facilities Services includes asset management, custodial services, maintenance operations, engineering and technical services, environmental services, grounds operations, and the Cal Zero Waste program.

Position Summary

The insulation worker completes jobs requiring insulation and/or asbestos abatement on campus.

Responsibilities

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform all duties related to the craft under supervision.
  • Maintain knowledge of asbestos removal and hazardous waste handling, regulations, and procedures.
  • Handle, contain, label, and follow emergency procedures related to asbestos materials safely.
  • Remove and/or encapsulate asbestos-containing materials.
  • Replace and repair damaged or missing insulation.
  • Estimate footage and fitting counts for re-insulation projects.
  • Select appropriate insulation considering project location and heat/chill factors.
  • Set up and use scaffolding and ladders to perform tasks above ground level and access tight or isolated areas.

ADMINISTRATIVE AND TECHNICAL:

  • Support maintenance projects and programmatic work.
  • Coordinate work with superintendents, project managers, inspectors, and clients.
  • Plan methods and procedures for abatement, insulation, and repairs.
  • Select tools, techniques, and methods complying with regulations and codes.
  • Respond to emergencies as needed.

SAFETY AND HEALTH RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform tasks safely according to safety regulations.
  • Stop work immediately if there is danger.
  • Report accidents or incidents promptly.
  • Attend safety meetings and training.

EMPLOYEE/ SUPERVISOR/ RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Maintain good relationships with customers, co-workers, and staff.
  • Use good judgment in communication, showing sensitivity and tact.
  • Treat everyone with respect and courtesy.
  • Promote teamwork.

CUSTOMER SERVICE/ RELATIONS:

  • Understand the roles of students, staff, and faculty as clients.
  • Communicate effectively with the campus community.
  • Respond promptly to service requests.
  • Report progress and major issues to supervisors and inform clients as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate orders and tasks clearly.
  • Ability to order supplies and materials.
  • Ability to interact with clients to define project needs.
  • Ability to work from drawings, manuals, and coordinate tasks.
  • Conformance with University, EH&S, OSHA, and other regulations.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, using stairs, ladders, and scaffolding.
  • Thorough understanding of local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Four years of apprenticeship or equivalent experience and three years of journeyman experience in a craft-related trade.

The hourly range for this role is approximately $80.18 (Step 1). This is a full-time, career position eligible for UC benefits, non-exempt, and paid bi-weekly.
