Sr. Principal Metrology Engineer

  2025-05-07     Diamond Foundry     San Francisco,CA
Description:

Diamond Foundry Inc. is solving the thermal limitation at the foundation of today's most exciting tech industries -- AI & cloud compute, electric-car power electronics, and 5G/6G wireless. We have managed to produce the world's first single-crystal diamond wafers and are now on a mission to put a diamond behind every chip. We are the rare unicorn that has grown fast and profitably. We received $515m in funding and are executing a multi-$B expansion plan for one of the greenest forms of tech manufacturing: converting greenhouse gas into diamond wafers using zero-emission energy.

Our Materials Science & Metrology team plays a crucial role in ensuring quality, precision, and consistency of our single crystal diamond technology. We are seeking a Snr. Principal Metrology Engineer to lead metrology initiatives, develop advanced characterization techniques, and drive improvement in quality and process control. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including R&D, process engineering, and manufacturing, to establish robust measurement methodologies, improve metrology capabilities, and ensure compliance with stringent quality standards. This role requires expertise in advanced characterization techniques, failure and data analysis within a semiconductor-like environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, validate, and optimize metrology techniques for single-crystal diamond materials and devices, including surface, structural, thermal and electrical characterization.
  • Establish metrology protocols for critical backend processes (e.g. polishing, thinning, cleaning, and bonding), implement statistical process control (SPC), and ensure compliance with industry standards.
  • Collaborate with R&D and process engineering to correlate metrology data with process variations, conduct failure analysis, and optimize process flows.
  • Partner with manufacturing teams to ensure seamless integration of metrology solutions into production workflows, troubleshoot measurement-related challenges and interface with equipment vendors.
  • Develop automated data analysis pipelines to enhance efficiency and accuracy in measurement reporting.

Requirements

  • PhD or MS in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering or a related field with 5+ years (PhD) / 8+ years (MS) of experience in semiconductor, advanced materials, metrology, or failure analysis.
  • Experience in advanced characterization techniques such as AFM, WLI, AOI, SEM and/or thermal and electrical characterization (TDTR, FDTR, LFA, EBD, etc.) including tool qualification, calibration, and maintenance.
  • Proficient in statistical data analysis, SPC, and software tools such as JMP, Python or MATLAB.
  • Familiarity with semiconductor backend processes (e.g. CMP, dicing, bonding) is highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication and strong problem-solving skills as well as the ability to work in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.
$140,000 - $195,000 a year
