The Position

This recruitment is ongoing and will close once a viable candidate pool is identified. The Police Officer (Entry) works under supervision, performing various law enforcement duties including protecting life and property, enforcing laws, conducting investigations, crime prevention, and special assignments such as community policing, SWAT, K-9, detective work, and more.

Candidates should understand modern policing issues, practices, and trends, possess excellent communication skills, and demonstrate the ability to interact with diverse communities. Graduation from a POST-certified academy within the last 12 months is highly desirable.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is an entry-level and first safety class position, performed under general supervision, with rotational assignments across various police functions. It requires a POST certification or recertification within the last three years and is distinguished from lateral officers by experience requirements.

Supervision

Receives general supervision from supervisory and management staff.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Enforce laws and ordinances
  • Patrol assigned areas
  • Respond to emergencies and calls
  • Make arrests and conduct investigations
  • Prepare reports and testify in court
  • Assist in traffic enforcement and safety
  • Handle hazardous situations and maintain public relationships

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of law enforcement terminology, ability to act with integrity, understand laws, communicate effectively, and demonstrate physical fitness. Education requirements include a high school diploma or GED, and graduation from a POST-certified academy within the last three years or recertification. Valid California driver's license, P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate, and U.S. citizenship are required. No felony or disqualifying misdemeanor convictions.

Additional Requirements

Candidates must demonstrate competence in key job dimensions, maintain personal conduct standards, and may need to reattend the police academy if certification is over a year old without recent experience.
