Groups and Formation Director: Christ Church East Bay

Overview

Reporting to and collaborating with the Lead Pastor and the Pastor of Care and Discipleship, this role will focus on assimilating newcomers and establishing regular attenders in existing community group, formation, and outreach ministries at Christ Church. Additionally, the Director will work to establish a vibrant young adult group aligned with Christ Church's culture and traditions, fostering a warm community and ongoing outreach among young adults. The Director will lead volunteer teams and implement strategies to help young adults grow in Christlikeness, connect in community, and engage in service opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

Groups

• Assist Pastors with assimilation of newcomers and regular attenders by guiding them into new friendships and deeper faith through Community Group involvement.
• Help recruit, develop, and support new Community Group leaders, launch new groups, and provide coaching.
• Encourage Community Groups to participate in outreach and service activities.
• Develop and multiply young adult Community Groups fostering welcoming community, teaching, spiritual growth, and multiplication.
• Expand and strengthen the young adults ministry, ensuring welcoming engagement and integration into the wider church community.
• Support planning and execution of community-building and spiritual events, including retreats and conferences such as an annual young adult retreat.
• Coordinate with our campus minister overseeing university ministry to undergraduate and graduate students, integrating graduate students into the young adult ministry.

Formation

• Lead young adult discipleship initiatives to promote biblical dependency, gospel centrality, and Christlikeness.
• Organize and lead Sunday Bible classes and adult education opportunities.
• Support weekly, monthly, and quarterly prayer ministries.
• Collaborate with the campus minister on the Cal Scholars Series.
• Assist with hosting seminars on singleness, dating, marriage, premarital counseling, and mentorship programs.
• Support annual evangelism training, develop the Alpha team, and coordinate Alpha course activities.
• Preach 2-4 times annually.
• Build partnerships with local organizations and campus fellowships to enhance formation and outreach.

Volunteer Recruitment, Training, and Equipping

• Recruit, train, and mentor young adult volunteers and leaders for discipleship and outreach.
• Coordinate with Pastors to align volunteers across ministries.
• Create pathways for young adults to assume leadership roles.

Other

• Promote the church's mission, vision, and values.
• Assist with church-wide events as needed.
• Perform additional tasks outside of the job description as required to support the church's mission and goals.

Salary: $75,000-110,000 depending on experience

Position Qualifications:

Qualifications

• Education: BA from Bible college and/or Master's from seminary preferred.
• Experience: 1-2 years in local church ministry preferred; seminary internship or field education acceptable.
• Deep personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
• Commitment to Christ Church's mission, values, and culture.
• Experience leading discipleship and outreach, especially with young adults or church ministry.
• Proven ability to recruit, train, and develop volunteer teams.
• Strong interpersonal and leadership skills; ability to inspire across spiritual stages.
• Familiarity with working with young professionals and graduate students in demanding environments.
• Extroverted, networker, connector, fun, passionate about sharing Jesus, theologically thoughtful, with a heart for discipleship.
• Gospel-centered disciple-maker with strategic and creative ministry skills.
• Ability to balance relational ministry with administrative tasks.
• Aligned with Christ Church's culture of reverence, safety, and sacrifice.
• Resonates with Christ Church's vision of a multiethnic, multigenerational community of explorers and disciples towards Christ, as culturally thoughtful and warm-hearted confessional Reformed evangelicals.
