Senior Mechanical Engineer, Electrochemical Cell Design

Redwood Materials, founded in 2017, aims to create a circular supply chain for electric vehicles and clean energy products, enhancing sustainability and reducing battery costs through innovative technologies that increase the use of recycled and sustainable materials in the global battery supply chain.

Position Overview: We are seeking a seasoned mechanical engineer with extensive experience in designing electrochemical cells and systems. The role involves driving the design and deployment of electrochemical systems to convert lithium-ion battery waste into useful products. You will optimize cell designs, develop custom balance-of-plant equipment, and oversee projects from conception through prototype, testing, pilot, and commercial phases. Collaboration with prototype machine shops, electrochemical experts, and other mechanical engineers will be essential.

Responsibilities:

  1. Design, build, prototype, and commission electrochemical cells at various scales
  2. Create custom balance-of-plant equipment supporting electrochemical cells and stacks
  3. Develop cost models for mechanical components and assemblies
  4. Define integration requirements for electrochemical systems in recycling plants
  5. Participate in verification and validation testing
  6. Collaborate with R&D teams to improve electrochemical performance
  7. Coordinate with plant design teams for installation and commissioning
  8. Perform mechanical FEA and CFD simulations
  9. Produce CAD models, drawings, and BOMs

Qualifications:

  • BSc or MSc in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Minimum 5 years of industry experience as a mechanical engineer
  • Expertise in electrochemical cell/system design (e.g., electrolyzers, fuel cells, batteries)
  • Experience in prototype development and testing
  • Knowledge of design for manufacturing (DFM)
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred), GD&T, FEA, CFD
  • Passion for sustainability and innovation

Physical & Working Conditions:

  • Hands-on work in labs, workshops, and outdoor sites
  • Exposure to hazardous materials and electrical hazards
  • Travel less than 10% as needed
