Salary Range: $5,083.00 per month to $7,228.00 per month. PLEASE NOTE: The starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $5,083.00 per month to $6,156.00 per month.

About the Position

The Office of Admission processes and evaluates applications at the freshman, transfer, and graduate student levels, focusing primarily on domestic U.S. residents. The office provides some support for the processing of International applications and works closely with Cal State East Bay staff, faculty, and the community. Admission staff process applications, determine residency, render admission decisions, and communicate with students in an accurate, timely, and efficient manner.

Under the general supervision of the Executive Director of Admission, the Admission Counselor positions coordinate the processing, evaluation, and advising of applicants. Counselors must follow a wide range of relevant policies when making final admissions decisions and are responsible for advising on admission requirements, policies, and procedures.

Responsibilities

Process Transfer Student Applications:

  • Obtain required information to determine eligibility using electronically submitted application data and transcript information.
  • Assess and interpret self-reported applicant information and academic records for eligibility determination.
  • Independently solve problems with applications by obtaining additional information as needed.
  • Interpret and apply policies to unusual cases and refer as necessary.
  • Plan processing and evaluation for assigned applicant pool portions, prioritizing work for different terms of entry.
  • Verify admitted applicants' eligibility for enrollment.

Evaluate Academic Documents and make Final Admissions Decisions:

  • Evaluate applications according to CSU eligibility policies and make final admissions decisions.
  • Evaluate individual college transcripts for completion of transferable units and required GE courses.
  • Independently evaluate transfer credit from test scores and accredited institutions.
  • Interpret transcript information and update student records regarding University Writing Skills Requirement (UWSR).
  • Assess completion of specific course requirements for impacted majors or special programs.

Advise students on admission requirements:

  • Advise prospective applicants regarding application processing and eligibility requirements.
  • Communicate with applicant populations in individual and group settings.
  • Counsel denied applicants regarding options and alternatives.
  • Participate in campus events such as Preview Day, Welcome Day, and Orientation.
  • Identify potential candidates for special admission programs.
  • Determine and advise on requirements outside of the major that transfer courses fulfill.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

  • Two (2) years of professional experience in student services or a related field.
  • A Master's degree in a job-related field may substitute for one year of experience.

Education:

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university in a job-related field.
  • Additional specialized experience may substitute for required education on a year-for-year basis.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of program practices and procedures; general knowledge of organizational management.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.
  • Use initiative in planning work assignments and implementing program improvements.
  • Advise students individually and in groups on routine matters.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty and staff.
