Position Summary

The Junior Cabin Leader works closely alongside Cabin Leaders and Program Specialists to create a safe, engaging, and enjoyable camp environment. This position includes residing in a cabin with campers, guiding them through daily routines, scheduled activities, and providing general supervision alongside a Cabin Leader. Junior Cabin Leaders foster a positive environment by leading games, hikes, and other recreational activities during free time and by assisting with camper management at specialized program sites, including the climbing tower, zip line, archery range, canoeing areas, hiking trails, and arts & crafts stations, in collaboration with Program Specialists. Junior Cabin Leaders will always be under the supervision of an adult staff member.

Job Responsibilities

Camper Safety and Well-Being:

  • Be aware of and follow emergency and safety protocols, reporting concerns to senior staff immediately.
  • Assist in ensuring health, hygiene, and safety are prioritized for all campers.
  • Follow YMCA, American Camp Association, and all local, state, and federal standards as directed by senior staff to provide a safe and positive experience.

Camper Engagement and Development:

  • Support campers in understanding and appreciating their environment through guidance from senior leaders.
  • Encourage and support campers for personal growth and positive behavior.
  • Foster connections among campers and with the YMCA community.
  • Assist in planning and leading engaging activities under the supervision of senior staff.

Supervision and Operations:

  • Assist in supervising cabin groups under the guidance of senior staff, ensuring campers' needs are met.
  • Support the camp schedule and assist senior staff in ensuring campers are where they need to be.
  • Help keep camp and cabin areas clean and encourage respect for facilities and the environment.

Communication and Relationships:

  • Provide excellent service to program participants by being approachable, friendly, and supportive.
  • Build respectful, meaningful relationships with staff, parents, and campers.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and conduct in interactions with others.
  • Actively participate in cabin, unit, and camp-wide activities, and assist in program areas as directed by senior staff.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 17 years old, must have a work permit authorized by the school if under 18.
  • Strong interest in working with youth and supporting their development.
  • Creativity and enthusiasm in areas such as arts, culture, health, fitness, and outdoor activities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with individuals of diverse ages, backgrounds, and experiences.
  • Willingness to learn, take direction, and be a positive role model for campers.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

The Junior Cabin Leader position involves working closely with campers in an outdoor, collaborative, and safety-focused setting. Junior Leaders will reside in cabins with campers, ensuring camper well-being overnight. The role requires physical stamina, mobility, and the ability to lift equipment, lead activities, and assist campers as needed. Extended periods of standing, walking, and participation in physical activities are expected, along with flexibility for long, variable hours, including overnight shifts. Meals and lodging are provided for the duration of the summer camp program.

Salary Description

The Junior Cabin Leader position offers a salary of $593.64 per week, based on American Camp Association (ACA) and county wage guidelines.
