Deputy Constable (Part Time)

Description:

Directly responsible for completion of assignments as given. Particular emphasis on civil and criminal matters directed out of the courts.

Part time deputies shall put in at least 16 hours a month as set out in policy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintain required training and qualifications as set out in departmental procedures.
  • Communicate with the public, administration, other police agencies, victims, and other municipal, county, and state employees in a professional manner.
  • Assist in developing and implementing proactive methods of reducing both criminal and civil activities.
  • Perform duties assigned in the absence of supervisors.
  • Perform investigations related to the department.
  • Assist other law enforcement agencies as needed or requested.
  • Inspect issued departmental equipment and supplies to ensure proper operation and availability.
  • Handle evidence properly, including identification, record keeping, preparation, security, and storage.
  • Follow proper jailing procedures, including booking, fingerprinting, transporting, and ensuring civil rights of prisoners.
  • Take sworn statements from witnesses, victims, and suspects.
  • Execute traffic stops and violator contact properly.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Must successfully pass a Field Training program as designed by the department.
  • Knowledge of the current Texas Penal Code, Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, Texas Transportation Code, Texas Family Code, Texas Government Code, Texas Property Code, juvenile laws, city ordinances, county regulations, departmental policies and procedures, and other state, federal, and local laws.
  • Knowledge of the skills and practices of a peace officer as presented in a certified police academy.
  • Knowledge of the safe handling and proper use of firearms, baton, and other defensive measures, devices, and weapons.
  • Knowledge of day-to-day skills and practices as they apply to law enforcement standards.
  • Knowledge of civil and criminal rights.
  • Ability to maintain calm and self-control in highly stressful, potentially dangerous situations.
  • Ability to operate assigned equipment and related items.
  • Ability to read training manuals, laws publications, criminal reports, civil reports, memorandums, and other legal documents.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations as necessary to prepare departmental reports, activity reports, and civil process reports.
  • Ability to write complete, concise, and accurate reports, memorandums, and other correspondence.
  • Ability to operate assigned vehicles safely in situations of extreme speed and difficult driving conditions, such as those encountered during pursuits.
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for long periods while performing job tasks.
  • Ability to grasp and manipulate with one or both hands protective equipment such as a baton, firearms, flashlight, handcuffs, fire extinguisher, and radio equipment.
  • Ability to both hear and talk oral communications in person and by radio and telephone.
  • Ability to perform duties both indoors and outdoors in extreme heat and cold.

PREREQUISITES:
Must have successfully passed the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Licensing exam.
Must pass drug test, psychological evaluation, physical exam, and criminal background check (paid by applicant).
Must have a valid Texas Driver's License and a favorable background record.
No previous law enforcement experience required, but preferred.
Must complete all employee policies and standards set out by Brazoria County.
