Minimum Qualifications:- High school diploma or equivalent (College coursework preferred).
- U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the U.S.
- Valid California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
- Ability to pass a physical agility test, background investigation, and medical exam.
- POST (Police Officer Standards and Training) Requirements:
- Must meet the California POST minimum standards for law enforcement officers.
- Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of academy enrollment.
- Completion of the POST written exam and physical agility test (if applicable) prior to hire.
- No felony convictions and must be able to pass a comprehensive background check.

Class ConceptThe Police Officer Trainee applicant is someone who is interested in becoming an Officer but has not yet completed the Police Academy. An applicant who is hired as Police Officer Trainee is sponsored by the Police Department to attend the Police Academy. While attending the Academy, the employee is considered a temporary employee who may be released at any time. At present, the Academy runs approximately six (6) months in duration. When the employee completes the Academy, they are sworn in as a Police Officer for the City and begin their Field Training.
Minimum QualificationsIn order to be eligible, applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent GED certificate.
- Be at least 21 years old.
- Be a US citizen, either by birth or naturalization.

Individuals applying for a peace officer position in California are required to meet several statewide minimum standards for employment. These standards include:
- No felony convictions
- A fingerprint and criminal history check
- Meeting the citizenship requirement (Included are provisions for permanent resident aliens. See citizenship requirements FAQs. )
- A background investigation indicating the individual is of good moral character
- Minimum age of 18 years
- Minimum education of United States high school graduation or passage of GED test
- A medical and psychological suitability examination
- An employment interview
- A reading and writing ability test.
In addition to the Academy, the trainee will be provided health, dental, vision, and PERS miscellaneous benefits for his/her family during this temporary employment period (no coverage for life insurance or short/long-term disability benefits).
Part-time employees are eligible for 24 hours of sick leave per year if the following conditions are met:
1. Work a min. of 30 days; and
2. Be employed with the City for 90 days.
Effective 01/01/2024, part-time employees are eligible for 40 hours of sick leave.

PO Trainee: California State Minimum Selection Standards (post.ca.gov) - What should be considered in my decision to apply for a California peace position: The minimum peace officer selection standards are set forth in Government Code Sections 1029 and 1031. I understand every California peace officer must be:
- Free of any felony convictions
- A citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship
- At least 18 years of age
- Fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record
