LIBRARY METADATA SPECIALIST

Overview:

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Library Metadata Specialist (Librarian/Curator). The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in cataloging, metadata management, and a deep appreciation for library standards and authority metadata. This role involves cataloging collections, working with controlled vocabularies, and applying current cataloging procedures in various formats, with an emphasis on maintaining and improving data accuracy.


Responsibilities:

  • Catalog and manage collections for special or academic libraries, ensuring compliance with current cataloging standards (RDA, MARC, Library of Congress, etc.).
  • Work with controlled vocabularies, engaging in data remediation and updates across different types of vocabularies (e.g., LC, Wikidata, ISNI).
  • Apply linked data principles and library-oriented ontologies such as BIBFRAME in cataloging workflows.
  • Utilize tools for metadata analysis, querying, and batch-loading, including MarcEdit, OpenRefine, SPARQL, and XSLT.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and manage various simultaneous cataloging projects.
  • Maintain high levels of proficiency in library systems, PC-based applications, and metadata languages like RDF and XML.


Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS degree OR a BS in History or Masters in Museum Studies with cataloging experience (library, physical material, or bibliographical cataloging)
  • Two or more years of cataloging experience in special or academic libraries (even internships or cataloging books collections will be considered)
  • Familiarity with RDA, MARC Bibliographic, Holdings, and Authorities formats
  • Knowledge of metadata management tools such as MarcEdit, OpenRefine, and scripting languages
  • Basic understanding of API's
  • Strong understanding of library-related authority metadata and cataloging procedures
  • Familiarity with controlled vocabularies and metadata remediation


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods and perform desk-based tasks
  • Capability to lift and maneuver objects weighing up to 10 pounds, and push a fully-loaded bookcart weighing up to 650 pounds
  • Occasional work in confined spaces or at heights


Pay:

  • $35 /hr


Location:

  • On-site
  • San Francisco, CA


Schedule:

  • Monday - Friday
  • 40 hours
