Job Description:
We are looking for an excited and responsible Sous Chef to join our food program. This is a full-time, salaried position with benefits. Ideal candidates are excited to explore foods and cuisines, to lead dinner service and also to engage in quotidian but important tasks like vegetable prep and cookery.

Job details:
- The Sous Chef will take point on all aspects of preparing delicious, varied, healthy dinners (in collaboration with the chefs and team) for an office space in downtown Berkeley, out of a rental kitchen down the street (currently) and soon(ish) out of our own kitchen.
- Clean, chop, cook or otherwise prepare delicious foods, both from recipes and from culinary knowledge
- Help deliver, arrange and label meals
- Clean equipment and facilities as needed
- The Sous Chef will work afternoon/evening shifts to prepare dinners four nights a week (12-8) and morning/afternoon shifts on Fridays
- Menus are written collaboratively, the dinner lead will help writing menus and lead the execution of them
- Position is full-time with benefits, salary 70-80k+ (DOE), vaccination required
Preferred Skills/Abilities:
- Solid to excellent knife skills and grasp of the basics of cookery
- Able to work both without recipes and to precisely follow recipes as needed
- One or more areas of cooking knowledge (experience with an ethnic or regional cuisines, baking experience, butchery, pickling/charcuterie/ferment work or others that applicant can talk about)
- Solid communication skills (English, written or verbal)
- Can act with sense of urgency as needed
- Strong sense of responsibility, will perform to high standards both with and without supervision
- Takes food safety and deliciousness seriously. Knows and follows food safety requirements.
- Maintains sufficient personal hygiene
Education and Experience:
- At least one year related professional experience required, 2-5+ years preferred (we care about the passion and skills you bring to the task rather than credentialism, but wish to see that you have experience in the kitchen and knowledge that you want to work there)
- Food handlers card required (may be acquired after hiring decision), servsafe or equivalent preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Job requires standing and walking for a full day, safely lifting at least 50+ pounds at a time, dealing with objects that are some permutation of hot, sharp and heavy
$70,000 - $80,000 a year
This is a full time, on-site role. Hours are Mondays through Thursdays, 12:00pm-8:00pm and morning/afternoon shifts on Fridays. We would like the candidate to start as soon as possible after receiving an offer, though there is some flexibility.
Compensation will depend on experience. We offer catered lunches and dinners, 401(k) and cover PPO health, dental, and vision insurance.
Our office is in downtown Berkeley, CA, thirteen seconds from the nearest BART (metro) stop.
