Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor and/or Aquatics Coordinator, this position provides swim instruction to adults and children and conducts related work as required. Swim Instructors teach, supervise, and assess students of all ages and abilities.
Essential Functions
Teach group and private swim lessons to adults and children of all abilities
Use proper teaching tools, equipment and techniques while teaching swim lessons.
Maintain order and prevent accidents through the enforcement of policies, rules, regulations and ordinances governing the conduct of patrons in the pool area.
Anticipate hazardous situations and take steps to prevent them.
Assist in the set up and clean up for swim classes.
Maintain a clean and debris free pool, pool area and bathrooms.
Maintain swim instructor dress code.
Maintain positive, professional and tactful public relations.
Attend staff meetings and training.
Maintain attendance records and logs.
Exercise patience with difficult people and situations.
Administer first aid and respond to emergent situations.
Assess students and provide timely objective feedback to students and or parents.
Requirements
Essential Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of instructional methodology and child psychology as it applies to instruction for swim lessons.
Knowledge of pool rules and practices.
Ability to maintain safety of pool and students in lessons.
Remain calm and efficient in stressful situations and emergencies
Ability to work with patrons of all abilities.
Qualifications
Equivalent to the completion of tenth grade; additional schooling is desirable.
CPR & First Aid Certification for the Professional Rescuer (training offered on the job).
Desired Qualifications
Certified Lifeguard Training is desirable.
Certified Water Safety Instructor
Physical Demands:
This position performs most duties and is located in an outdoor, aquatic environment around wet and/or slippery surfaces. There may be exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals, heat, cold, sun, and inclement weather conditions. Visual and auditory ability to observe and respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation is necessary. Ability to lead and interact in group activities and perform related physical skills and the ability to stand, walk, sit, stoop, knell or crouch. Ability to climb, push, and pull and lift and carry objects up to 20 pounds.
